a small business. we have strayed far from the principles of limited government. our government taxes and spends out of control and our civil liberties are constantly under attack. we can fix it, but we need to get government back into its cage. >> our final opening statement is from jeff flake. >> good to be here. two days ago, cheryl and i received a wonderful phone call from my son ryan and forming as we are grandparents. aidan was born into a wonderful family, but he was born into $50,000 of debt. his share of the federal debt we all hold. that is why the stakes in this election are so high. we have to have somebody who understands fiscal discipline. that has been my record in the house of representatives, where i fought my own leadership on issues like earmarks. they punish me for it, but i kept at it and we do not have earmarks any more. that is the kind of attitude i will take to the united states senate. my opponent have a great rÉsume. but a great resume is not a plan. he has been running for a year now and we do not know where he stands on the major issues of the day. we ha

enduring presence will be, and we're working on that right now both internal to our government, but also with our nato allies. so we're trying to determine based on the agreements made in lisbon and then reinforced in chicago about what this long-term commitment will be, and it's scoped against several missions, one of which is counterterror, another of which is continuing to train and advise at some level. another is to enable other agencies of government to do their job in afghanistan. and so as we determine how to, what we'll need to accomplish those missions based on the growth of the afghan security forces, sometime early in 2013 we'll come up with a number that will define our enduring presence. and then we'll take what we have there now, which is 68,000 u.s. and about 30, 34,000 coalition partners, and we'll establish a glide slope to get from where we are to where we're going to be. and the important point is that in that question is i want to reinforce that our objectives remain both sound and achievable. as for the insider threat, as i mentioned in my prepared remarks, the insi

specifically to bring the governments instead of gridlock to the nation's capital? and i think we split ahead of time, and the first response, final response will go to congresswoman sutton. sutton: thanks very much for the question. i think building those relationships is important but it's also not just about reduce it down with, it's who you stand up for. this race is not just about who is free to be the representative from the 16th district it's going to be who is going to be represented in the 15th defeat the 16th district to read my life is standing up for the middle class and those that aspire to it. i stood up to special-interest and politicians who violated the public trust whether democrats or republicans and to protect medicare and social security earnings that endorsement of the committee for social security and medicare. i stood up for the troops and veterans while i reached across the aisle to pass legislation in the stop-loss protection and other things as well because i know that people deserve a government plot on the back but definitely deserve a government on their side and

working for our government needs to have protection, and that is an abject failure and that should be a big thing in this election. a chocolates look at mitt romney's comments yesterday in virginia -- host: let's look at mitt romney put the comments just in virginia. [video clip] >> the attacks on america should not be seen as random act. they are a larger struggle that is played out over the middle east, a region that is in the midst of the most profound upheaval in a century. the fault lines of this struggle can be seen in benghazi. the attack on our consulate on september 11, 2012, was likely the work of forces affiliated with those that affect our homeland on september 11, 2001. the latest result can not be blamed on a reprehensible video, despite the administration's attempts to convince us of that. the administration has finally conceded these attacks were the deliver work of terrorists they use violence to impose their ideology on others and who seek to wage perpetual war on the west. guest: it is interesting. on the one hand, mitt romney was criticized for his initial respo

, kentucky, east of here tomorrow. this is a fundamental discussion about the role of government. mitt romney in that debate the other week used the phrase "trickle-down government," which is a very clever and very condescending formulation of what government is. the government programs that we have, that include social security and medicare and medicaid and education and so forth come from the ground up. they're what people want, they're what people need, they're what people voted for. they're part of the fabric of american life. they're not trickle-down anything. and what the president has to do and what joe biden has to do tomorrow night is to confront that notion. joe biden has to not only defend the president and attack paul ryan for his libertarian ideas, joe biden has to defend social security and medicare and the very idea of the usefulness and the importance of government in sharing responsibility in america, a big, heavy lift for joe biden tomorrow night. >> it's a heavy lift, howard, i agree, but it's also right in his wheelhouse. everyone in this country knows his middle class bac

subsidies to >> so there is no government-run health care? >> yes, there is government-run health care. the president could not deal with it in his own debate. he has no idea what his bureaucrats will do. these are not doctors. >> four hours away until the 2012 vice-presidential debate. it will happen here inside the norton center for the arts in danville, ky. they were the smallest institution ever to host a televised general election debate. it starts at 9:00 this evening. our preview coverage starts as 7:00. an hour-and-a-half debate. we will open up our phone lines. we will read your tweets and e- mail's. our cameras have been covering all the other activity going on at centre college. all of that is under way. here is a live look, here on c- span. [no audio] >> if you were the moderator, what questions would you ask? some of the postings -- where do you stand on a women's right to choose? why is not the united states drilling for oil? they have taken the oath to uphold the constitution. has either of them read it? go to facebook.com/c-span. you can post your questions and read wha

is to use the phrase that mitt romney use the in the debate last week, trickle down government. they're trying to discredit something they called trickle down government. it's up to joe biden tonight to begin to rebuild and to remind people that government is a cooperative exercise. people voted for social security, they voted for medicare, they voted for the people who built the modern state that we have. that's a big technical order and i think biden will be up to it. ryan has a much easier task in many ways. he can stand there and point to every negative economic statistic that's still out there, and there are plenty of them, and just repeat them over and over and over again. he's got a much easier strategic menu than joe biden does. biden's got to do a million things at once which is, frankly, not very easy. >> howard once back in the '80s robert downey jr. was on "saturday night live" doing a sketch playing a movie critic, i'll never forget, i saw this movie, it changed my life. i saw it again and it changed it back. if this race is kind of like that to where the whole movie, th

as a government? do we want to do that in civil society? do we want to be taking a wway e medicare promise to people in any generation when you say to a person when they reach their 80s, go out, get on a bus and go find yourself an insurance company that's going to insure your health at this point. do we really want to do those kinds of things? and was it right to deal ideologically with the auto industry when we had to interrupt the normal processes of the market and do something extraordinary? romney said, no, let it happen. let them eat cake. obama said, no, i'm going to take this risk. he was right. the ideological issues are the very issues where i think what you can do tonight, it's a political term in philadelphia, you middle the guy. you take this guy, paul ryan, and middle him. force him to choose between his hard right ideology and positions he's taken over the years, stick to those positions or slink over to the romney positions that loosey-goosey thing in the position in the middle where he flips around and slips around so much he can't tell where he stands. will ryan be ryan t

in the government on back of b.p. there is an oil sheen. they say it is cleaned up, it is over, but there is an oil sheen out there coming with a new report they are close to a multibillion dollar settlement to pay from the damages that happened in the year of 2010. that coming up as our coverage continues from danville, kentucky, this afternoon. , between one heavy on government when it comes to medicare, medicaid, the obama health care plan and one that talks about really injecting private competition. undoubtably in the medicare, undoubtedly into health care. i talked about slowing the rate of growth by medicaid in turning over the control to the states. these are huge issues. these are big, big issues and i feel once again if you are a voter, is 26 days out. feels like the campaign really hasn't begun if you're trying to figure out, who do i vote for? >> let me ask you -- >> hologram to govern? >> you been watching paul ran for 10, 15 years now and know him pretty well. to think this is a matter of him being over coached? at times you can almost read it in the facial expressions. don't screw up any names in afghanistan. make sure you seem credible on this or that policy, many of which he hasn't been immersed in heavily in the house. the coaching may have inhibited talking about the things he does feel passion about and is informed about some of the spending and entitlement issues. >> i think you two sets of handcuffs. once on

care question, also. if you want to see what happens and how a health plan that is a government-run health plan does not work, take a look at what happened when tennessee put ten care in place and that was going to be government-run, it was the test case for hillary clinton health care. and i have to tell you, we still had the same number of uninsured coming into our hospitals and seeking treatment. the thing is, chris, you don't have an example where government-run health care has increased access, lowered cost, and gotten more individuals into the health insurance rolls. >> i thought that that's what governor romney bragged about doing in massachusetts. >> i think that when you look at government-run health care, what you do not have is an example -- >> romney was wrong in massachusetts? so he was wrong in massachusetts? >> romney tried something that worked for massachusetts. he feels like letting the states solve the issue, and i agree with that, let the states take this up. just like with our medicaid. >> okay. so government-run doesn't mean government-run? >> on a bipartis

, medicare is the government health insurance program mostly for people over the age of 65. about 50 million americans rely on this program and this financial future over the long term doesn't look so good. the scary part is, though, that both campaigns say the other side's plans for dealing with that are just awful. >> obama care takes $716 billion from medicare to spend on obama care. all you seniors out there, have you been denied choices? they haven't put a credible solution on the table. their ideas are old and their ideas are bad and they eliminate the guarantee of medicare. this is their essential claim that my opponent will destroy medicare, but is that really true? let's take a look at some of the facts and i'll bring in tools and look at the white house plan to begin with. this is the landscape they're dealing with. the cost of medicare will generally increase over the next ten years until it reaches about $1 trillion annually. they want to reduce that by about 10%. that's the orange part here. that's the part they're cutting out. now, their opponents look at that and say that's re

to the ambassador, the govern was holding a press conference. that's not presidential leadership. >> american leaders said in testimony they did request more security and didn't get it. >>> on domestic policy, they went at it on whose tax plan is better for the middle class. the president failed to mention the 47% comments. last night, the vice president was sure to get it in. >> it shouldn't be surprising for a guy who says 47% of the american people are unwilling to take responsibility for their own lies. my friend, in a speech in washington said 30% of the american people are takers. these people are my mom and dad, the people i grew up with, my neighbors. they pay more tax than governor romney pays on his federal income tax. i have had it up to here, this 47%. it's time to take responsibility here. instead of signing pledges to grover nor quis not to ask the wealthiest among us to bring back to middle class, sign a pledge saying we are going to level the playing field. >> romney is a good man. he cares about 100% of americans in this country. with respect to that quote, i think the vice p

you've got -- as an american citizen, that you know that your government gave you the full story right away? >> no, chuck. but i believe my government is doing everything it can to uncover the truth through a thoughtful investigation. and when i think of libya, the first thing that comes to my mind is the fact that when our people were under attack, the attack was ongoing. governor romney stood in front of the cameras and basically accused the president of sympathizing with the attackers. >> you're confident no politics played a role in the initial explanation? >> i see no political benefit from saying that there were politics involved. what could they have hoped to have accomplished by coming out with an he cexplanation that th felt was an explanation at the time. i see no political agenda. what's the reason for doing that? >> two polls in ohio, we had one at 6, one at 4, they are all showing the same thing. a narrowing gap. do you feel that on the ground? >> no. i feel great enthusiasm. let me he witell you, the presi the vice president was not going to win ohio by eight points. it's

jobs. now, we think that government taking 28% of a family and business's income is enough. president obama thinks that the government ought to be able to take as much as 44.8% of a small business's income. look, if you taxed every person in successful small business making over $250,000 at 100%, it would only run the government for 98 days. if everybody who paid income taxes last year, including successful small businesses doubled their income taxes this year, we'd still have a $300 billion deficit. you see, there aren't enough rich people and small businesses to tax to pay for all their spending. and so the next time you hear them say don't worry about it, we'll get a few wealthy people to pay their fair share, watch out, middle class, the tax bill is coming to you. that's why we're saying we need fundamental tax reform. let's take a look at it this way. eight out of ten businesses, they file their taxes as individuals, not as corporations. and where i come from overseas, which is lake superior, the canadians, they drop their tax rates to 15%. the average tax rate on businesses in t

borrowing, higher taxes, a government takeover of health care. it's not working. it's failed to create the jobs we need. 23 million americans are struggling for work today. 15% of americans are in poverty. this is not what a real recovery looks like. you deserve better. mitt romney and i want to earn your support. we're offering real reforms for a real recovery for every american. mitt romney, his experience, his ideas, his solutions is uniquely qualified to get this job done. at a time when we have a jobs crisis in america, wouldn't it be nice to have a job creator in the white house? the choice is clear. a stagnant economy that promotes more government dependency, or a dynamic growing economy that promotes opportunity and jobs? mitt romney and i will not duck the tough issues. and we will not blame others for the next four years. we will take responsibility and we will not try to replace our founding principles. we will reapply our founding princip principles. the choice is clear. and the choice rests with you. and we ask you for your vote. thank you. >> and thank you, both, again. t

. >> the idea the federal government funding planned parenthood, they're going to say no, we're going to stop that. >> the obama campaign saying this represents a candidate trying to move to the center. >> like we saw again sort of a shifting towards bipartisanship. >> i'm not going to lay out a piece of legislation here because i intend to work with republicans and democrats in congress. >> wow. here's old moderate mitt. where you been, boy? i missed you all these last two years. >> let's get straight to cnn contributor, the sirius xm radio host pete dominick. he's got a good panel. >> thank you, wolf blitzer, for letting us squat in "the situation room" for a few minutes. we have a very important conversation about what we just saw. it's moderate mitt. by the way, i think bill clinton took my unsolicited advice last week which was to get out there on the campaign trail. but, guys, what are we witnessing right now? mitt romney will say one thing in an interview or a speech and then his staff literally walks it back on iran, on tax policy, on health policy and now on abortion. my opinion is,
